What Is the Use of the TET Exam? What Are the Eligibility Criteria to Apply for It?

The TET exam or the Teacher Eligibility Test is an eligibility test that is hosted in order to determine whether the candidate is eligible to take up the role of a teacher in any of the schools or not. The TET exams are hosted both at the central and state levels, based on the guidelines that have been published by the NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education).

The CTET or the Central Teacher Eligibility Test is conducted by the CBSE or the Central Board of Secondary Education at the national level. At the state level, they are conducted by the respective state authorities every year, such as the WB TET, UP TET, PS TET, OTET, MAHA TET, HTET, HP TET, KTET, and so on.

Why do students take the TET exam?

The TET exam is for candidates in India who wish to teach in Indian Government schools. It is the minimum level of qualification for applicants and has been made compulsory for aspiring teachers. Qualifying applicants can take up the teaching role for classes I to VIII. 

The TET exam is taken in two papers – Paper 1 for the teachers who wish to teach classes I to V and Paper 2 for the ones who aim to teach classes VI to VIII. The TET exam is hosted by both the Central and State Governments of India. Most of the states host their own particular TET exam. This exam is hosted in order to meet the requirements of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.

Eligibility criteria of the TET exam

Eligibility criteria for TET Paper 1

  • Candidates must have passed the Senior Secondary Exam or an equivalent exam with a minimum of 50% marks. Candidates who have passed and are appearing for the final two years of Diploma in Elementary Education are also eligible.
  • Candidates who have cleared the Senior Secondary Exam or an equivalent exam with a minimum of 50% marks and are about to appear for the Bachelors of Elementary Education.
  • Candidates who have graduated and are appearing for the final year of the Diploma in Elementary Education.

Eligibility criteria for TET Paper 2

  • Candidates who have graduated and passed or are appearing for the final year of the Diploma in Elementary Education.
  • Candidates who have graduated with at least 50% marks and have passed or are appearing for the 1st year of B.Ed.
  • Candidates who have cleared the Senior Secondary Exam or an equivalent exam with a minimum of 50% marks and will appear for the final year of B.EI.Ed.
  • If the candidate has passed or is currently appearing for the final year of the 4-year duration of the integrated course of BA, B.Sc., B.Ed., BA, or any other equivalent course is eligible to appear for the post.
